Inversão é colocar o auxiliar antes do sujeito (como numa pergunta) depois de uma expressão negativa ou restritiva no início da frase — Never have I seen..., Not only does she work... — para dar ênfase e um tom mais formal/dramático.

A forma¶
EXPRESSÃO NEGATIVA/RESTRITIVA + AUXILIAR + SUJEITO + VERBO
Never have I seen such a beautiful beach.
Nunca ↑aux ↑suj vi uma praia tão bonita.
A frase normal seria I have never seen such a beautiful beach. Ao puxar o never para o início, o auxiliar e o sujeito trocam de lugar — exatamente a ordem de uma pergunta (Have I seen...?), mas sem ser pergunta.

O pulo do gato: sem auxiliar, entra o do/does/did¶
Se a frase original não tem auxiliar (presente ou passado simples), a inversão cria um — igualzinho às perguntas:
- She rarely goes out. → Rarely does she go out. (não ❌ Rarely goes she)
- I never imagined this. → Never did I imagine this.
- He little knew the truth. → Little did he know the truth.
O verbo principal volta para a forma base — quem carrega o tempo é o do/does/did.
As expressões que pedem inversão¶
1. Frequência negativa: never, rarely, seldom, hardly ever - Never have I been so happy. — Nunca estive tão feliz. - Seldom do we see rain like this in London. — Raramente vemos uma chuva assim em Londres.
2. Not only... but (also) — a mais útil para o IELTS: - Not only does the city have great weather, but it also has amazing beaches. — A cidade não só tem um clima ótimo, como também tem praias incríveis. - Not only did we save money, but we also made friends. — Não só economizamos dinheiro, como também fizemos amigos.
3. No sooner... than / Hardly... when — duas coisas em sequência imediata (aqui entra o past perfect, N3-05): - No sooner had we landed in New York than it started to rain. — Mal pousamos em Nova York e começou a chover. - Hardly had I opened my laptop when the internet dropped. — Mal abri o notebook e a internet caiu. - 📌 Memorize o par: no sooner → than · hardly/scarcely → when.
4. Not until / Only + tempo ou condição — a inversão vai na oração principal, não na do until/when: - Not until we arrived in the city did we realise how hot it was. — Só quando chegamos na cidade percebemos o calor que fazia. - Only when the date was confirmed did we book the tickets. — Só quando a data foi confirmada é que compramos as passagens. - Only by practising every day will you improve your listening. — Só praticando todo dia você vai melhorar o listening.
5. Under no circumstances / At no time / In no way / On no account — proibição e negação enfáticas (formais): - Under no circumstances should you share your password with anyone. — Sob nenhuma circunstância você deve compartilhar sua senha com ninguém. - At no time did she mention the price. — Em momento nenhum ela mencionou o preço.
6. Little — "mal sabia" (clássico de narrativa, ótimo no Speaking Part 2): - Little did I know that moving abroad would change my life. — Mal sabia eu que me mudar para o exterior mudaria minha vida.
7. So + adjetivo... that / Such + substantivo... that: - So expensive was the rent that we considered sharing a house. — Tão caro era o aluguel que pensamos em dividir uma casa. - Such was the heat that we stayed home all day. — Tamanho era o calor que ficamos em casa o dia todo.
Inversão nas condicionais (sem if) — Had / Were / Should¶
No estilo formal, dá para apagar o if e inverter:

- Had we saved more, we would have left earlier. — Tivéssemos economizado mais, teríamos partido antes.
- Should you have any questions, contact the university. — Caso você tenha dúvidas, contate a universidade. (típico de e-mail formal)
- Na negativa, não se contrai: ✅ Had I not seen it... · ❌ Hadn't I seen it...
Contraste com o português¶
O português até tem algo parecido ("Mal sabia eu...", "Jamais vi eu..."), mas é raro e literário. A diferença prática:

Ou seja: em português a ênfase vem da entonação; em inglês formal/escrito ela vem da ordem das palavras. E atenção ao registro: inversão é enfática e formal — na conversa do dia a dia, I've never seen... continua sendo o normal.
🎯 Como aparece no IELTS¶
- Writing Task 2: inversão é marcador clássico de grammatical range (critério de banda 7+). Para a meta de 6.0, é a cereja do bolo: UMA frase bem construída com Not only... but also ou Only by + -ing já mostra variedade. Frases-modelo prontas:
- Not only does this policy reduce costs, but it also benefits the environment. — Essa política não só reduz custos, como também beneficia o meio ambiente.
- Only by investing in education can governments solve this problem. — Só investindo em educação os governos podem resolver esse problema.
- Speaking Part 2/3: Never have I..., Little did I know... soam impressionantes contando uma história — mas só se saírem naturais. Errar a inversão chama mais atenção do que não usar.
- Reading/Listening: textos acadêmicos e palestras usam Not until..., Should you..., Rarely... — reconhecer a estrutura evita perder a referência de quem faz o quê.
- ⚖️ Dose: 1, no máximo 2 inversões por redação. Mais que isso soa artificial e pode custar pontos de naturalidade.
Pegadinhas e erros comuns de brasileiros¶
- Esquecer a inversão depois da expressão negativa — ❌ Never I have seen this. → ✅ Never have I seen this. (começou com never no início, TEM que inverter)
- Inverter o verbo principal em vez de usar do/did — ❌ Rarely goes she out. → ✅ Rarely does she go out. (sem auxiliar na frase original, crie um — como numa pergunta)
- Inverter a oração errada com Only when / Not until — ❌ Only when did we arrive, we relaxed. → ✅ Only when we arrived did we relax. (a inversão vai na oração PRINCIPAL)
- Trocar os pares than/when — ❌ No sooner had I sat down when... → ✅ No sooner had I sat down than... (no sooner → than · hardly → when)
- Contrair a negativa na condicional invertida — ❌ Hadn't I known... → ✅ Had I not known...
- Usar inversão no meio da frase — ❌ I never have I seen... → ✅ a inversão só existe quando a expressão negativa abre a frase; no meio, ordem normal: I have never seen...
Auto-teste¶
- Reescreva com inversão: I have never eaten such good food. → Never ______.
- Complete: Not only ______ (she / speak) English, but she also speaks Spanish.
- Certo ou errado: "No sooner had we arrived when the show started."
