There is / There are é o "tem/há" do inglês: serve para dizer que algo existe em algum lugar — there is para singular e incontáveis, there are para plural — e NUNCA se traduz "tem" como have.

THERE ARE + coisas no PLURAL
There is a park near our house.
Tem um parque perto da nossa casa.
There are many parks in the city.
Tem muitos parques na cidade.

Na fala, there is quase sempre vira there's: There's a café on the corner. — Tem um café na esquina. Já "there're" praticamente não se usa na escrita — escreva there are por extenso.
O pulo do gato: "tem" ≠ have¶
Em português a gente usa o verbo ter para existência: "Tem uma piscina no prédio". O inglês não faz isso. Have = posse (alguém possui algo); existência = there is/are:

Quando o dono aparece, aí sim é have: The hotel has a pool. (o hotel possui) vs There is a pool at the hotel. (existe uma piscina lá). As duas estão certas — o erro é começar a frase com Have ou It has querendo dizer "tem".
Singular ou plural? Olhe o substantivo que vem DEPOIS¶
A escolha entre is e are depende da primeira coisa mencionada:
- There is a sofa and two chairs. — primeiro item no singular → is
- There are two chairs and a sofa. — primeiro item no plural → are
- There is some water. — incontável (água não conta) → sempre is
Incontáveis (water, milk, money, rice, information...) funcionam como singular: there is. Isso vem direto do [N0-06].
Negativa: isn't / aren't ou no¶
Dois jeitos, os dois corretos:

- There's no... é muito comum na fala: There's no time! — Não tem tempo!
Pergunta e respostas curtas¶
Inverte: Is there...? / Are there...? — e a resposta curta repete there:

⚠️ Na resposta curta afirmativa NÃO se contrai: ✅ Yes, there is. · ❌ Yes, there's.
Some e any com there is/are¶
Padrão clássico do A1, que combina direto com este tema:
- Afirmativa → some: There are some good cafés in the neighbourhood. — Tem uns cafés bons no bairro.
- Negativa e pergunta → any: There aren't any trains after midnight. / Are there any spiders in the house?
There is vs It is — existir vs apontar¶
Outro contraste que confunde: there is apresenta algo novo (existe); it is fala de algo que já foi mencionado:
- There's* a river in the city. It's* very wide. — Tem um rio na cidade. Ele é bem largo.
- ❌ Is a river in the city. — em inglês a frase não pode ficar sem sujeito; o "there" ocupa esse lugar.
There em outros tempos (visão geral)¶
O there acompanha o verbo to be em qualquer tempo — a lógica é a mesma:

No N0 o foco é o presente — passado e futuro aparecem de novo quando você estudar esses tempos. Só guarde: a estrutura "there + to be" viaja junto.
Pegadinhas e erros comuns de brasileiros¶
- Traduzir "tem" como have — ❌ Have a party tomorrow. → ✅ There is a party tomorrow. (have = posse, não existência)
- Usar "it has" para existência — ❌ It has a pool in the building. → ✅ There is a pool in the building.
- There is com plural — ❌ There is many people at the beach. → ✅ There are many people... (plural → are; nativos relaxam na fala, mas na prova não)
- Frase sem sujeito — ❌ Is a problem with the visa. → ✅ There is a problem with the visa. (o there é obrigatório)
- Confundir there/their/they're — there is (tem) · their house (a casa deles) · they're = they are (eles são/estão). Mesmo som, três escritas.
